How to Apply

There are six steps to admission to the Mining Graduate Program at UBC:

  1. Contact prospective supervisors
  2. Apply onlinePersons registering for a MASc or PhD do so through the Faculty of Graduate Studies and those wanting to register for MEng do so through the the Dean’s office.

There are two completely separate application processes although all applicants need to send their information to the NBK Institute of Mining Engineering to get approval prior to sending to the applicable places.
  3. Submit supporting documents to the Mining Graduate Program Office
  4. Application distributed by Mining to prospective supervisors
  5. Offer of admission from the Faculty of Graduate Studies
  6. Agreement letter from Faculty of Applied Science

The Faculty of Graduate Studies sets the minimum requirements (LNK) for admission to any graduate program at UBC. International students should also check their country’s specific requirements. (LNK)

How to find a supervisor

Securing the supervisor is a vital step to your application. Check the Prospective Supervisor list and then contact the faculty members whom you consider to be the best match. Tell them about your interests and background. Ask if they are currently accepting new students and if they have funding available to support an additional graduate student and their research. Indicate the name of the prospective supervisors on the application form and in the letter of intent. If you cannot contact potential faculty members, please list them so we can make sure that they get your application.

Students interested in course-based Master’s programs do not need to find a supervisor. Contact the program coordinator, Dr. Marek Pawlik (eml: mpp@mining.ubc.ca)

Application and Supporting Documents

Complete the online application form. Arrange for two sets of official transcripts (in English) from each post-secondary institution you have attended or are presently attending to be sent to the Mining Graduate Program Office. Transcripts must be submitted in endorsed sealed envelopes in order to be considered official by the University of British Columbia. Please visit the Faculty of Graduate Studies (LNK) website for further clarification.

Ensure that the Mining Graduate Program Office receives three reference letters (in endorsed sealed envelopes), a letter of intent indicating experience, career goals and research interests, and a resume. International students must also submit original TOEFL scores. For information contact www.toefl.org.

Complete applications will be sent to all prospective supervisors that you suggest. You will be notified as to whether or not there is a faculty member able to supervisor you (i.e. has funding for your stipend and research costs). If affirmative, an agreement letter will be mailed to you from the Mining Graduate Program Office. The offer of admission is sent directly from the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Supporting documents checklist:

  1. Transcripts / Academic Records (two official sets)
  2. Three Reference Letters (form: as Word Document, as PDF )
