Degree Information

The purpose of a M.Eng. degree is to increase student’s skills and knowledge in a particular aspect of mining or mineral processing. This program has the same admission requirements as the MASc and offers the same courses but instead of a thesis, students are expected to take additional courses. Currently, M.Eng. degree students can specialize in four areas:

    M.Eng. UBC
  • Mining Geotechnics
  • Mineral Processing
  • Mine Environment
  • Mine Economics and Finance

An M.Eng. degree consists of 24 credits of course work in your given area of interest and a 6 credit engineering project. Usually this amounts to 8 courses, which must mainly be selected from offerings in the Faculty of Applied Science.

Students may use a maximum of six credits of undergraduate courses to fulfill these credit requirements The 6 credit engineering project, involves describing the results of an engineering project in a written report that is reviewed and graded by at least one professor. Please note that before registering in the project course, students must enter into a written agreement with a professor who agrees to review the project work and the report.  M.Eng. students must achieve a passing grade of at least 68% in all courses taken, although up to six credits will be permitted for marks between 60-67%.
