The mining industry has begun to recognize and address the situation, while UBC students are leading the way to create positive, responsible mining techniques for future mining engineers.

The Sustainability Working Group (SWG) uses a cooperative team leadership approach. Graduate student members of the group are from a variety of disciplinary and experiential backgrounds.

The group includes Mining, Geological and Chemical Engineers, Geologists, Lawyers, Planners and Anthropologists with experience in the mining industry, consulting and non-governmental organizations.

This wide range of disciplinary specialization provides a broad knowledge base and a fertile atmosphere for interdisciplinary exchange. The group emphasises teamwork and collaboration, which results in consistently excellent project outcomes.
