Knowledge about rock strength and related geological and hydrogeological situations in an underground mine is extremely important in developing safe operating practices.
CERM3 has recently built a new Geomechanics Laboratory as part of its mandate to perform research into Mine Health and Safety. The lab is housed in the basement of the Coal and Mineral Process Engineering Building and contains a number of innovative facilities to support the study of rock mass strength.
