Mining Engineering (formerly Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering) at UBC has a long tradition dating back to the establishment of UBC.

In the fall of 1915, the Faculty of Applied Science became one of the founding Faculties at UBC.

It involved a common first-year in Arts, then a common first-year in Applied Science, followed by three years of specialized study in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Surveying, or Mining.

We invite you to read a brief history (PDF) of the Department written by Jake Turnbull (PDF) who was our first Department Head.

During the past 90 years UBC has produced over 1100 Mining and Processing Engineers. Many of our graduates have gone on to highly successful careers in the Mining Industry.

In May 2006 the department received a $7.5 million boost to help increase its capacity for education and research. The gift, comprising a major donation from Teck Cominco Ltd. (LNK) and contributions from industry associates, helped create the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering. This was followed in 2007 by a matching donation from the BC Government.
